Chapter Sixteen

Inspector Herren went back out to the car and Theo Abbott stayed behind for another round of shots.

“I don’t like him,” I said. “He seems judgy.”

“He investigates other cops and tries to maintain some dignity and honor in his job. That’s enough for me.”

“During those shots though, he gave me a look that set me wrong. He’s got something up his sleeve,” I said.

“You’re going to kill a man and he’s going to be watching. That’s bound to make a man nervous, I would imagine.”

“He’s not going to actually kill him,” Bianca said, then she turned to me. “Right? I mean—”

“I was actually hoping to work that out with you guys,” I said, trying to avoid eye contact with Bianca. “I mean, I’m not a cop…you heard my story. People die when I’m around and sometimes I’m the one pulling the trigger.”

Abbott sighed and leaned back in his chair dramatically.

“You seem like an okay kid, despite all the murders and such, so I can tell you what’s what. Right?”

I nodded.

“I’m long past naïve,” I said.

Abbott rubbed his hands together and ran his fingers through his hair before leaning forward toward me.

“Officially,” he said, “we don’t want any casualties. We want a clean takedown and let these guys run the course of our fine justice system.”

“And unofficially?” Bianca asked.

He leaned in even closer this time, and I thought he was going to jump across the table and grab me.

“The more of these slimy fuckers you can take out before it’s over, the happier we’ll all be.”

This time it was Bianca’s turn to have the look of abject horror. It seemed to just now be dawning on her that this was likely to be messy.

“I’m…I mean, we…this isn’t what we had in mind. Dominick?”

“Come on, B,” Theo said. “This can’t be the first time it’s occurred to you that there might be—”

Bianca interrupted him with another deep, throaty laugh that frightened me a bit. “Oh my god, the look on your face right now is priceless. The level of condescension between the two of you is enough to dry me up for men eternally.”

Abbott cracked a smarmy smile, but I wasn’t as easily convinced. She might be trying to throw us off, but there was enough emotion in that speech that I knew some of it was true. It was bad enough trying to work something like this out with rational professionals, but the amount of emotion swamping this adventure was damn near lethal. I knew it was all going to go south eventually, but I was still hoping if I died that it would be clean and quick. The more emotional baggage we were working with, the more of a chance there was for any of us to end up tied to a chair in a dark room waiting for a man with a bag of tools to carve us up slowly.

“Listen,” Bianca said, “I don’t do this serious shit. And listening to you try and work this out like some kind of hardcore gun crew is just too much.
